RESUMO

This thesis presents a case study which has investigated the acquisition of a foreign language (English) via synchronous and asynchronous computer mediated communication. The central objective of the study was to observe whether a long period of computer mediated communication between a foreign language learner and native speakers of the target language would promote an improvement in accuracy in the use of the target language, in general and, more specifically, in the use of verb tenses. The subject of the study was a cartoonist, with basic linguistic competence in English, whose main objective was to translate the dialogues of his cartoons. The subject corresponded with seven native speakers of English for fifteen months. The data consisted of pre- and post-tests and an analysis of the texts produced by the subject in communication with the native speakers and the research worker.
