RESUMO

This dissertation presents the author s worries and the main relativizations imposed to the concept of space in the media era. The work consists of a theoretical introduction and two further chapters where the present image of the city is sough. The first chapter shows, through a historical walk, the main transformations that the large cities went through in the past century: horizontal, vertical and populational growth, social groups diversification, an increase in the means of transportation speed, appropriation by the means of reproduction of reality - photography, cinema and television. This walk is made the baudrillarian thread of destruction by excess: a city being destroyed until it becomes an image in the computer screen. In the second and last chapter, this search is made from the interpretation of teenagers drawings about the cities of Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The main discussions in this work are linked to the direct or mediated perception of the urban space and to the appropriation ofthe visual space ofthe city by the media.
