RESUMO

The city by its inhabitants. Their action and participation in São Paulo city s administration in the second half of nineteenth century establish a reflection about city and citizenship in the middle of nineteenth century, from the representations bequeathed by inhabitants, local and state authorities, administrative technicians soil mechanics experts and caricaturists. A search is made in its streets, presenting them based on the narrative included in the documentation itself, and in the images bequeathed by contemporaries. Inspired in the idea of the right to a heaIthy city, the inhabítants claim the accomplíshment of the Cíty CouncÍl s attributions. They proclaim the existence of illegal trash points and the accumulation of fearing stagnant waters near their homes. The possibilíties of jeopardising their properties, or the difficulties faced to develop economical activities which required circulation on the streets, forro the main arguments that justify requests. The motions sent to the City Council allow to notice the claims of German, Portuguese, Italian and Turkish immigrants. Bravery and solidarity, established among different ethnic groups can be identified in the process of socialísation and adaptation to work conditions, habíts and existing traditions in the daily life of the city
